Yesterday the Knights took on the Panthers of Modesto High and simply got spanked! Modesto is a model of what our program needs to become in order to be highly competitive in our league.
F/S Girls (MHS 83; TDHS 25)
Alicia Bargas won the 1600m (7:03.21) and the 3200m (15:58.18) as the only double winner for Downey.
Katie Alexander was the only other event winner in the 200m (32.16). She was also second in the 100m in 14.08. Isaura Serna finished 2nd in the 200m (32.7). Rounding out the Downey scoring was a quartet of 3rd place finishes: Abby Homan, 1600m (8:25.18); Rejveer Sandhu, 400m (1:22.02); Isaura Serna, 100m (14.62); and Kira Ocanada, 200m (35.3).
F/S Boys (MHS 72.5; TDHS 50.5)
John Kreifels was a double winner in the Discus (105'9") and the 100m (11.9). Incidentally this was his first time ever throwing the discus. Kai Zambrano won the 200m in 24.29. Austin Holt won the shot put in 45'2". The only other Downey event winner was Francisco Solorzano in the long jump (16'8"). Francisco was also 2nd in the triple jump (31'9.5"). Mitchell Evans was 2nd in the LJ (16'4") and the high jump (5'4"). Omar Ordaz was 2nd in the 200m (26.24). Mitchell Dill took 2nd in the discus (98'3") and Jesus Anguiano was second in the shot put with a throw of 40'1". Saul Zigala came in second in the 800m (2:20.93) and 3rd in the 400m (57.82). Josh Baldonado took third in both the 200m (26.26) and the 100m (12.53). Mitchell Dill tied for third in the Shot Put (39'10"), and Alfonso Urbano was third in the 3200m (12:50.11).
Varsity Girls (MHS 82; TDHS 49)
As has been the case all season the girls were led by Simone Wend with wins in the HJ (4'7") and the TJ (31'5.5") and by Sierra Durham with wins in the 800m (2:46.62) and the 1600m (6:01.05). The only other win by the Downey ladies came from the 4x100 relay team of Wend, Finch, Romo, and Lowe with a time of 54.84. Fallon Ferris was second in both the discus (56'0") and the shot put (25'10"). Felicia Romo was second in the LJ (12'11.25"). Micayla Lowe was second in the TJ (29'0.5") and third in both the 100m (13.57) and the HJ (4'2"). Karina Redding took 2nd in the 400m (1:12.81). The other Knights who took third were Vanessa Alvarez in the 100mH (19.34), Taylor Wilson in the 300mH (59.62), Marissa Ontiveros in the 800m (2:52.24), and Jenny Hernandez in the 200m (29.19).
Varsity Boys (MHS 100; TDHS 36)
Out of the 16 contested events the Downey varsity boys won only three! ouch! Malcolm McCloud won the discus (123'1"), Conner Fenton won the high jump (6'2") and Ty Cummins won the LJ (19'2"). Incidently Conner's high jump of 6'2" moves him into a tie for 6th place on the all-time Downey list. Additionally Denzelle Marable high jumped 6'0" to finish 2nd. That jump moves him ito a tie for 12th on the all-time list. Other second place point winners included Andrew Osgood in the 1600m (4:53.58), Blake Lopes in the 400m (54.56), Jacob Hackett in the 100m (11.47), and Malcolm McCloud tied for 2nd in the shot put (42'2"). Aaron Zwahlen also took second in the 300mH. His time of 43.72 moves him into #10 on the all-time list. The 4x100m relay team (Cummins, Lowe, Hackett, Gorman) ran 44.94 in a losing effort. BUT that time is good for the 8th fastest in Downey history. Anthony Garcia took 3rd in the 800m (2:19.24), Ty Cummins was third in the 200m (23.65). Jake Crenshaw was third in the 3200m (12:12.4) and Kylo Vaught took 3rd in the 110mH (15.97).

WEEK 5: Athletes of the Week
During the fifth week of competition we had a duel meet at Grace Davis and the distance runners ran at the Bronco Distance Carnival. The coaches had a difficult time selecting the male athlete for this week. We ultimately decide to award it to two deserving individuals.
MALCOLM MC CLOUD and KYLO VAUGHT
Malcolm won both the discus and the shot put events vs Grace Davis. Kylo also won two events against Davis, the triple jump and the 300m hurdles. He also placed in the 110m hurdle race.
FELICIA ROMO
Felicia competed well against Davis. In spite of having other comitments, she remained loyal to the team. Her dedication and work ethic serves as an example for the rest of the team.

Bronco Distance Carnival
A handful of Downey distance runners drove up to Fair Oaks on Friday and competed with some of the Sac Joaquin Section's best at the Bella Vista Bronco Distance Carnival. Almost all of the Downey athletes acheived PRs for their efforts.
F/S Boys' Distance Medley Relay
This was the first event of the evening and the Downey athletes may not have gotten completely warmed up. Alfonso Urbano led off with the 1200m leg. He is one tough frosh, but he found himself in with the "big boys" on this leg. Halfway through his leg we were well behind the rest of the teams, but he hung in there to run 4:00.34 for his leg. Saul Zigala took the baton next for the 400m leg. He made up a significant portion of the gap with a solid 59.68. Anthony Garcia closed the gap and passed two teams in his 800m leg of 2:16.29. Jake Crenshaw ran the 1600m anchor leg. He passed another team and had to hold off a late charge. His PR 1600m relay split of 5:12.29 finish the race for us in 8th place (12:29.91).
F/S 1600m
With a very short time to recover and warmup again, Jake Crenshaw doubled back in the F/S 1600m. He was the just about the last person to get into the fastest of the two heats. As such he may have been overmatched and still tired from the DMR. He struggled the whole race near the back. Eventually gutting out the finish in 5:24.57, finishing in 41st place out of almost 80 in the 2 heats.
Varsity Boys' 1600m
Andrew Osgood fought from the back of the 1600m pack to the middle by the 800m mark. As the kickers began to move he struggled to hang on. Eventually he crossed the line with a huge PR of 4:37.54 for 13th place. This mark currently ranks him as #4 in Stanislaus County.
F/S Boys' 800m
In the F/S Boys' 800m Anthony Garcia bolted to the front as is his tradition. He gave up a few places over the middle 400m and then finished with a burst to hold on to 4th place and earn the only Downey medal of the evening. His 2:10.59 was a PR andranks him currenty as #10 in the county. Saul Zigala ran in the second heat. He is generally a sprinter but adjusted to the 800m nicely. He closed hard over the final 200m, passing many runners to finish 23rd overall in 2:21.51.
F/S Boys' 3200m
Alfonso Urbano laced up his racing shoes again for the F/S 3200m. It was a very fast and difficult field. He struggled to hang on to the last couple of runners for most of the race but managed to gut out a PR performance of 11:53.05 for 25th place.
Girls' 3200m
Sierra Durham toed the line in an enormous 42 runner field for the 3200m. She knew it would be a fast race and we were looking for her to be towed along to a fast time. That is exactly what happened as she went through the 1600m mark in a near best of 5:48.68 and hung on during the second mile to finish in 14th place with a time of 11:51.12. This time was a PR by 20 seconds and ranks her as #3 in the county for the year. More importantly it moved her into the #5 spot all-time for Downey. As sheis one of only 5 girls ever at Downey to break twelve minutes in the 3200m.
Varsity Boys' 3200m
Andrew Osgood doubled back from his successful 1600m race in the large field of the 3200m. He ran most of the race near the back of the lead pack. As the pace increased and the pack thinned, he struggled but hung on for a big PR. His placed 16th with a time of 10:18.73. This mark ranks him 4th in the county and #8 on the all-time Downey F/S 3200 list.

TDHS v Grace Davis
Although I don't have complete results I will write up what I do have.
Varsity Girls (TDHS 35 Davis 94)
Sierra Durham won the 1600m (6:15), 800m (2:45), and 3200m (13:25) to score 15 of the team's points. She was the only Downey girl to win an event. Most of the girl's team left the meet prior to their events to go to a dance performance practice.
Varsity Boys (TDHS 57 Davis 78)
The score was closer than it otherwise might appear. Due to a poor handoff we lost the 4X100, didn't run a team in the 4X400, and were missing our top distance runner. Unfortunately, this was a winnable meet that we didn't win.
Malcomb McCloud won the shot put and the discus (119'21").
Kylo Vaught won the triple jump (38'3") and the 300m hurdles (46.8).
Anthony Garcia won his first varsity 800m of the year in a time of 2:19.
Caleb Lowe was the only other Downey event winner taking the tape in the 110H with a time of 16.79.
As I receive more complete results I will post them.
