Section Masters Meet

The Sac-Joaquin Section Masters track meet was held over two days, last Thursday and Friday. The 4x100m Relay team and Conner Fenton competed on Thursday. Simone Wend competed on Friday. It may seem cliche' to say that it is an honor to just qualify for the Masters meet, but it is true. For a track program that has struggled over the past decade to find consistency, these athletes are hopefully laying the foundation of tradition for future Downey track athletes to not only qualify for Masters but move on to the State Meet.

With all of that said it wasn't the best week for Downey track athletes. The 4x100m relay team of Ty Cummins, Caleb Lowe, Jacob Hackett, and Shane Gorman struggled with two of their handoffs which resulted in a slower than hoped time. They finished 17th in the section with a time of 43.99. On a higher note their best time of 43.74 ranks them #4 all-time at Downey.

Conner Fenton who had a season PR of 6'2" in the high jump only cleared the openning height of 5'11 on Thursday. This left him finishing tied for 13th in the section. On a higher note: his 6'2" season best ranks # 6 all-time at Downey.

One week earlier Simone Wend would produce a huge PR of 34'10" in the triple jump. Friday just wasn't her day. Her best jump was 30'7" (over 4 feet off of her PR) which would place her 21st. Her season best TJ ranks as # 3 all-time. Her long jump (16'5.25") ranks her #4, and her high jump best of 4'10" ties her for #6 all-time. She was also a member of the 4x100m relay team whose best time of 53.1 ranks as #7 all-time. Inspite of how it ended, her marks more than validate the spectacular 2011 track season that she had.

D1 Section Results

The D1 Sac Joaquin Section prelims and finals were held last Wednesday and Friday in Elk Grove. Thirteen Downey Athletes participated. The tp 10 places qualify for the Section Masters meet next Thursday and Friday in Sacramento. Below I will summarize the results of each athlete:

PAUL BILODEAU (300m hurdles)--Paul competed on Wednesday and ran well for the first half of the race but seem to run out of gas at that point to finish in 30th place with a time of 46.30.
KARINA REDDING (300m hurdles)--Karina competed on Wednesday and finished 30th in 55.46
MALCOLM MCCLOUD (Shot Put)--threw on Friday and finished 26th with a throw of 40'6"
DENZELLE MARABLE (High Jump)--jumped on Friday and cleared the opening height of 5'10" but missed 3 times at 6' to finish in 13th.
SIERRA DURHAM (3200m)--Sierra ran on Friday and was in the 10th spot for half the race but faded a bit over the final mile to finish in 11th place with a time of 11:54.22.
ANDREW OSGOOD (1600m, 3200m)--Andrew ran both races on Friday. The 1600m was first. He finished in 18th with a near PR time of 4:35.87. About 90 min later he competed in the 3200m but looked tired. His time of 10:18.63 placed him 22nd.
KYLO VAUGHT (110m hurdles, Triple Jump)--Kylo hurdled on Wednesday and jumped on Friday. In the hurdles I believe that he hit every hurdle. You can imagine that this wouldn't make for the fastest of times. His time of 16.22 placed him 14th. In the triple jump he landed about 38'8" but his whole flight officially was recorded with no distance (I am unsure why).
CONNER FENTON (High Jump)--Conner jumped on Friday. He cleared the opening height of 5'10" and the next height of 6" even. Fortunately many other jumpers missed at 6" or cleared it on a later jump. This set Conner up for 7th place (6'0") and a qualifying spot in the Masters Meet!
SIMONE WEND (Long Jump, High Jump, Triple Jump)--Simone long jumped on Wednesday. Her jump of 15'10.25" was well off of her best and placed her 16th. On Friday she did the HJ and TJ. In the HJ she failed to clear the openning height. At this point she was very frustrated and only had the Triple Jump left. Her first jump was 33'5" which was a PR. Her next jump was even better, 34'3". She saved the best for last as she sailed 34'10.5" on her last jump. This mark placed her 10th overall and qualified her for Masters. The 34'10.5 leap also moved her up the all-time Downey list to #3.
TY CUMMINS (Long Jump, 4x100m Relay)--Ty long jumped on Wednesday. His best leap was 20'9" which was near his PR. It placed him a very respectable 12th place. Ty also and ran the relay on Wednesday in the prelims and Friday in the finals. In Wednesday's prelims the 4x100 team moved the baton nearly flawlessly around the track to finish in 7th place in a new PR time of 43.75. In Friday's finals they had at least two bad passes which resulted in a slower 44.28 time, but still 7th place. They move on to next week's Masters meet.
CALEB LOWE (110m Hurdles, 4x100m Relay)--Caleb hurdled on Wednesday and ran the relay on Wednesday in the prelims and Friday in the finals. In the hurdles, like Kylo, Caleb hit way too many hurdles. He finished in 16.41, 17th place.
SHANE GORMAN (200m, 4x100m Relay)--Shane ran the 200m on Wednesday and ran the relay on Wednesday in the prelims and Friday in the finals. In the 200m Shane looked strong in his heat with a time of 23.4 which was 15th overall.
JACOB HACKETT (4x100m Relay)--Jacob ran the relay on Wednesday in the prelims and Friday in the finals.

So the 4x100 team of Gorman, Cummins, Hackett, and Lowe; Simone Wend in the TJ, and Conner Fenton in the HJ all qualifed for next week's Masters. Sierra Durham will be an alternate in the 3200m and may get to compete if someone else scratches. Good Luck to all of these fine athletes.

SIMONE WEND--Simone is the season's first repeat AOW winner and for good reason. At the MMC championships she won the HJ with a leap of 4'10" (tied for #5 all-time at Downey), she placed 2nd in the TJ at 33'1" (#5 all-time), she placed 3rd in the LJ, and she led off the 4x100 relay team which place 5th in 53.1 (tied for #5 all-time). MMC Championships

F/S Girls (6th place 11 pts)
We only had three girls participating in this division.
Alicia Bargas finished 6th in the 1600m with a 12 second PR of 6:40.2. She then double back in the 3200m with 2nd place and a 42 sec PR of 15:16.19. Carolyn Fraze placed 8th in the 800m in 3:25.07.

Varsity Girls (6th place 54 pts)
Jennifer Hernandez grabbed the last scoring spot in the 200m with a time of 28.8. Marissa Ontiveros barely missed breaking six minutes in the 1600m (6:00.8). In the 3200m Sierra Durham placed 2nd and qualified for sections with a time of 12:16.51. In the same race Rory Jiminez was 6th (13:09.87). In the 100m hurdles Vanessa Alvarez took 6th in a PR time of 18.71. Downey scored in the 300m hurdles with Karina Redding’s 4th place (55.14). Her time was an improvement of over 2 seconds. With her 4th place finish Karina also sneaks into the section meet. In the same race Taylor Wilson finish just behind Karina in 5th with a time of 55.31. The 4x100m relay team of Wend, Finch, Hernandez, and Lowe finished 5th in a time of 53.1. This time ties for #5 on the all-time Downey list.

Simone Wend again dominated the jumping events. She won the high jump in a new PR for her of 4’10”. This leap moved her to #5 on the all-time Downey list. She took 2nd in the triple jump with another PR leap of 33’1”. Again that distance was good for #5 on the all-time Downey list. By the time she got to the long jump I suspect that she was a little tired. Her long jump of 15’3” was a foot off of her best but still good enough for 3rd place. Simone qualified for sections in all three events. She also single-handedly scored almost half of Downey’s points in the meet. It was simply and amazing day of competition for her.

F/S Boys (1st place 137 pts)
The F/S boys won the meet for the second year in a row!
John Kreifels placed 2nd in the 100m with a time of 11.59 (#10 all-time for F/S). In the 200m Kai Zambrano took 2nd in 24.17, Mario Sanchez was 3rd in 24.85, and Josh Baldonado was 6th in 26.37. Saul Zigala placed in both the 400m and 800m. He was 3rd  in the 400m (57.42) and won the 800m by passing two runners in the home stretch (2:16.17. This time was a 5 second PR for him. Jake Crenshaw won the 1600m in 5:15.72. He came back later and took 3rd in the 3200m (12:20.53). Alfonso Urbano was 4th right behind Jake in the 3200m (12:35.53). The 4x100m relay team (Kreifels, Sanchez, Zambrano, Harris) took 2nd (barely nosed out for first) with a time of 46.88. The 4x400m relay team (Zigala, Zambrano, Baldonado, Harris) took 3rd in 3:55.19. In the HJ Herman Harris and Mitchell Evans both cleared 5’4” and tied for 1st place. In the long jump Francisco Solorzano took 2nd (17’3”) and Jake Crenshaw was 6th in 16’2”. Francisco doubled back to also place in the triple jump. His leap of 35’3” was a PR and was good enough for 4th place. Downey athletes dominated the shot put, taking three of the top 6 places. John Kreifels won with a throw of 44’7”, Austin Holt placed 2nd (41’3”) and Jesus Anguiano came in 6th (38’8”). Kreifels tripled up and took 2nd in the discos with a throw of 105’9”. Mitchell Dill was 6th in the discus with a throw of 103’1”.

Varsity Boys (2nd place 101.66 pts)
Shane Gorman and Jacob Hackett tied in for 6th in the 100m with a time of 11.35. Shane came back later to score a section qualifying 4th place in the 200m with his 23.06. In the 400m Blake Lopes took 5th in 54.44 and Richard Lopez was 6th in 56.2. Anthony Garcia hung on for 7th place in the 800m (2:11.32). Andrew Osgood grabbed two section qualifying spots, one with his 2nd place (4:41.42) in the 1600m; and one for his 2nd place in the 3200m (10:18.98). Caleb Lowe and Kylo Vaught both qualified for sections in the 110m hurdles. Caleb took 2nd in a big PR time of 15.61. Kylo was right behind him in 3rd (15.85). In the 300m hurdles Paul Bilodeau lowered his personal best to 44.36 in finishing 4th and sneaking into sections. The 4x100 relay team (Cummins, Lowe, Hackett, Gorman) finally raced to their potential! Their 43.94 clocking placed them 3rd overall, qualified them for sections, and ranks as #4 all-time at Downey. The 4x400m relay team (Campbell, Garcia, Lopes, Lopez) knocked 6 seconds off of their best time to finish 5th in 3:47.74. Denzelle Marable and Conner Fenton each cleared 5’10 in the high jump to tie for 2nd place and qualify for sections. Ty Cummins won the long jump and qualified for sections with his 20’00.75 leap. WEEK 9: Athletes of the Week

Week 9 found the Knights competing against the Patriots of Beyer. There were some outstanding marks during the meet.

KATIE ALEXANDER: has been a stalwart of the girls F/S team all year. She has record solid marks in the 100m and 200m in every meet this year and is always woring hard at practice.

TY CUMMINS:  long jumped 20'9.5" this week against Beyer. It was a PR by over 18 inches. He was also a rember of the 4x100 relay team tham ran 44.58 (#7 on the all-time Downey list)

Downey vs Beyer

Last Wednesday the Knights competed against the Patriots of Beyer.

F/S Girls (Downey 51; Beyer 0)
Obviously Beyer had no team, but that doesn't lessen the effort of the young lady Knights. Taylor Wilson won two events, the high jump (4'2") and the 100m (13.76). Alicia Bargas also won two events, The 1600m (6:58.84) and the 3200m (16:19.62). Rejveer Sandhu won the 400m (1:20.81), and Carolyn Fraze won the 800m (3:25.78). The only other winner was Katie Alexander in the 200m (32.93).

F/S Boys (Downey 84; Beyer 18)
Jake Crenshaw led the charge in scoring by winning the 1600m (5:29.46) and the 3200m (12:45.71). He also placed second in the 800m (2:25.99) and the long Jump (17'7") for a total of 16 points to almost single handedly outscore Beyer. Francisco Solorzano won the LJ (18'0") and the TJ (34'8.5") John Kriefels won the SP (44'4"), which would have been good enough to easily win the varsity shot as well. He also took second in the 100m (11.95) and the Discus (96'1"). Oh and did I mention that he ran a leg on Downey's winning 4x100m relay team (47.05). Mitchell Evans won the HJ in 5'4" and then took second in the TJ (31'10"0 and third in the LJ (17'3.5"). Other event winners were Saul Zigala in the 800m (2:22.05) and Josh Baldonado in the 100m (11.9). Alfonso Urbano took second in both the 1600m (5:51.87) and 3200m (12:49.58).

Varsity Girls (Beyer 100; Downey 23)
The girls simply got CRUSHED! Simone was sick, Micayla was hurt(?), Jenny and Fallon were at a soccer game. Would it have really mattered...probably not, but it would have been a 30 or 40 point loss instead of nearly an 80 point loss. Highlights were difficult to come by. The only first place finish was Karina Redding in the 300m hurdles (57.4). Sierra Durham scored 6 points with her two second place finishes in the 1600m (6:09.78) and the 800m (2:43.02). It should be mentioned that this was Sierra's first loss of the season in a Varsity 800m race. Felica Romo in the LJ (13'7.5") and Rocio Ramirez in the 3200m (13:52.65) also place second.

Varsity Boys (Beyer 68; Downey 59)
On another day the Knights may have won this meet. Andrew Osgood was feeling under the weather and went home after one race, that might have been the real deciding factor...we'll never know.
Let me begin with the highlights. Denzelle Marable cleared 6'2" to win the high jump. This mark represented a PR for Denzelle and moved him ito a tie for #6 on the all-time Downey list. The 4x100m relay team of Cummins, Lowe, Hackett, and Gorman had their fastest time of the year in a losing effort. The 44.58 time is good for #7 all time and hopefully gives them some momentum going into the MMC meet. Ty Cummins had a huge PR of nearly 18" in his LJ victory of 20' 9.5". Kylo Vaught won the TJ (38'10.5") and the 110mH. Malcolm McCloud won the discus (128'9.5") and took 2nd in the shot put (39'4"). Shane Gorman having perhaps his best meet of the season won the 100m in 11.3 and took second in the 200m (23.19). Paul Bilodeau won the 300m hurdles in 46.37. A handful of Knights took 2nd in teir events: Caleb Lowe in the 110mH, Jacob Hackett in the 100m (11.49), Blake Lopes in the 400m (55.28), and Kenji Soares in the 3200m (13:00.65).

Sacramento Meet of Champions

Andrew Osgood and Sierra Durham were Downey's lone representatives at the Sacramento Meet of Champions this past Saturday.

Andrew was first up on the track in the F/S 3200m. He hung with the lead pack for much of the race and then dug deep to finish in a big PR time of 10:00.35. His 5th place earned him a medal for the effort. His time moved him into #3 all-time on the Downey F/S list.

Sierra was next in the Girls Open 3200m. She ran in the back third of the pack for much of the race before plowing through the wind on her own in an attempt to reach the middle pack. She caught and passed several of those runners to finish in a respectable 12th place. Her time of 11:56.09 was very respectable given the extremely windy conditions.

Later in the afternoon Andrew took to the track again in the F/S 1600m. He ran great for the first two laps hovering in the chase pack just behind the leaders. Somewhere on the third  lap the wind and the previous race took its toll. As runners around him made moves and sped up he was unable to respond. He ultimately place 13th with a time of 4:45.73.

WEEK 8: Athletes of the Week

Week eight found the Knights competing against the Panthers of Modesto High. There were some outstanding performances. This week's athletes of the week are:

ALICIA BARGAS
Alicia has improved greatly over the season. Both her confidence and her performance have risen. Against MoHi she won the F/S girls 1600m and 3200m. She has a great work ethic and always has a smile on her face.

CONNER FENTON
Against MoHi Conner high jumped 6'2" to win the event and move into a tie for 6th place on the all-time Downey high jump list.
