Week 3 and Week 4 Runners of the Week

Week 3
Week 3 found the Knights competing against the rest of the MMC in Cluster #1. It was the teams first taste of the year of the "Legion Loop." As always there were some excellant marks.

CAMERON MILLER: was the 2nd Downey runner to cross the line in the varsity race. He was 18th overall and completed the 3.03 mi course in 19:30.

RORY JIMENEZ: Coach Osgood says, "making excellent progress toward becoming a fabulous contributor to her team, working hard & became the #2 runner for Varsity girls!" Rory finished 13th overall in the Cluster meet and finished with a time of 22:24 which was good for #9 on Downey's all-time list.

Week 4
During week 4 the Downey varsity runners competed in the 38th annual Stanford Invitational.

PIERSON DEVERS: ran the Stanford 5K course in a Pr time of 19:11 to finish in 186th. Coach Ippolito says, "All of our runners improved their best times by at least :40 sec. Pierson also improved his PR and had a great attitude during hard practices."

SIERRA DURHAM: finished in 66th place at Stanford in a time of 20:27. Coach Osgood says, she is "working at improving time & consistantly leading the team toward success."

Stanford Invitational

The varsity boys and girl competed in the Stanford Invitational this past Saturday. The races were huge and fast (and a little overwhelming).

The boys were led by Andrew's very strong 33rd place. His time for the 5K course was a PR 16:37. The gap behind Andrew was huge. Guadalupe and Pierson placed 177th and 186th respectively (19:00 and 19:11). The rest of the team finished in the final 15 of the 207 racers on the course. This race illustrated that although Downey may be third in the MMC, they have much that needs to be improved before they will be competitive on the larger stage.

On the girl's the results were also telling. They finished 26th out of 29 teams. Sierra got out too slow and them struggled to find room to make up ground. She finished in 66th place, 20:27. Rory ran a fine race, finishing in 21:29, 119th place. Rocio faded a bit as the race progressed (135th, 21:54). Natalie went out too fast and suffered through the later stages finishing in 175th (22:47) just ahead of the hard charging Katie in 181st (23:00). The other two girls finished in the final 15 competitors, again showing that there is much work to do if they hope to qualify for the Sac Joaquin section meet.

After the races the team ate lunch and then returned to the Stanford campus. They ran on the Stanford track and explored the Canter Art Museum. To complete the day they walked around a portion of the 8000 acre campus.

County Rankings

After finishing 3rd in MMC Cluster #1, the Downey girls slipped from the #3 to the #4 ranking in the county. The MMC dominates the list behind the #1 Riverbank Bruins with Modesto High holding the #2 spot, Enochs moving up to #3, Downey in 4th, and Gregori grabbing the fifth spot. There is still room for improvement with the lady knights who placed eight runners in the top 29 in the MMC.

Next up for both the varsity boys and girls will be the challenging Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto on Saturday, Sep 24th.

MMC Cluster #1

Downey runners hooked up against the rest of the MMC schools last Wednesday on the Legion loop.

The F/S girls were first up. Eventhough there were only six girls representing Downey in this race, they placed second behind MoHi and really ran well. Alicia Bargas led that way placing 4th (16:10) with Erin Redding right behind her in 5th (16:23). Deja Martin was the next Knight across the line. She passed about 10 runners in the final 400m to finish in 10th (17:14) just ahead of Eleni Quick in 11th (17:15). Rounding out the scoring was Carolyn Fraze in 14th (17:20). MHS 23/TD 32; TD 23/EHS 32

The F/S boys were next up on the circuit. Downey would put the bare minimum 5 runners on the line. Alfonso, with his varsity experience moved up after a slow start to place a strong 5th place in 12:34. There was a long wait for the remaining Knights to reach the line. Justin Goering was 31st (13:51), followed by Conner Hannon in 35th (14:07) and Tanner Walsh in 37th (14:11). Hopefully these young men will go out more assertively in future races. The final scorer was Haeden Puryear who crossed the line in 47th place (14:47). The F/S boys beat JHS and GDHS, both of who did not field a full team.

The varsity girls had lofty goals, high hopes, and a #3 county ranking going into this race. Modesto High was ranked #2 and Enochs #5. Gregori also brought a strong team to the meet. The combination of these four teams made this the most stacked race of the day. Sierra Durham took the early pace and led a pack of 14 runners through the half mile. She was still leading a group of 8 at the midway point. At the 2 mi mark she was tripped, did the splits, and bounced back up. Although the recovery was quick, she had slipped several spots in the pack and was unable to regain her full stride. She eventually finished 5th (20:45) behind 3 Enochs girls. The next wave of Downey girls came in the form of Rory Jimenez in 13th (22:24--this time puts her #9 all-time for TD on this course), Rocio Ramirez in 14th (22:35), and Natalie Franco (22:49). At this point Enochs, MoHi and Downey had all put 4 runners across the line. Unfortunately MoHi would have 5 more finish before our next pack of girls came in. Katie Schreder was 25th (24:00), Madeleine  Souza was 27th (24:01), Karina Redding was 28th (24:15), and Anna Casas was 29th (24:17). Placing 8 runners in the top 29 would usually be a great day, but placing 3rd behind Enochs and MoHi was a bit disappointing.
Duel Meet scoring: MHS23/TD34; EHS 23/TD 34; EHS 26/ MHS 31; TD 25/GRE 32
Invitational scoring: EHS 47, MHS 54, TD 70, GRE 81, BEY 102

The competition in the varsity boys race wasn't as strong in the sense that there weren't as many top runners or strong teams BUT two of the top four runners in the county (#2 Osgood and #4 Heese) would duke it out for first place bragging rights. Also the old guard and tradition of Modesto Hi would battle the youth of Gregori in a very tight team race. Andrew Osgood and Naoh Hesse (MHS) would immediately break from the pack and open up a big gap by the 1/2 mile mark. Andrew settled in and let Noah do much of the work until the last mile when Andrew would surge away to take the victory in 17:01. This time improved his #1 all-time TD mark for this course by 2 secs. Again a lot of time would elapse before the rest of the Knights would hit the tape. Cameron Miller finished next in 18th place (19:30), Guadalupe Torres was 21st (19:42), Pierson Devers was 23rd in 19:44 and Danny Mauricio rounded out the scoring in 24th (19:55).
The boys would actually place third behind MoHi and Gregori. MHS 20/TD 43; MHS 25/GRE 31; GRE 20/TD 41
Invitational scoring had MHS beating Gregori 41 to 48.

Downey Girls Make County Rankings

Off of their strong (surprising to everyone other than Knights in the know) showing at Saturday's Sierrra Invitational, the Downey girls leaped into the #3 spot on the Stanislaus County ranking. Their performance is based on team depth and the HUGE improvement over the past year of Rory Jimenez and Natalie Franco. The addition of Madeleine Souza has also given the already solid core a huge boost. Congratulations ladies...don't get big-headed there is alot of racing left this season.

Sierra Invitational Results

Yesterday the Knights took on a host of teams from near and far at the 9th Annual Sierra Invitational @ Legion Park in Modesto. There were some fine Downey performances in the very large fields of runners.

First up in the Large School Frosh race the boys ran together until the end of the 2 miles when Justin Goering (47th 13:36) out kicked his two team mates; Conner Hannon (50th 13:48) and Tanner Walsh (53rd 13:53).

The large School Soph Boys 2mi was the next race with a Downey competitor. Danny Mauricio went out with more composure than last week and it paid off with a very solid 10th place, 11:59 finish. Haeden Puryear finished in 81st with a time of 13:54.

Downey combined its frosh and soph girls into the Large School Soph race in order to create a scoring team. Alicia Bargas finished 10th (14:57). Erin Redding was right behind her in 14th place with a time of 15:01. It is fun to see these two ladies improve each week as they gain confidence and experience.
Rounding out the cast for Downey were Eleni Quick (40th, 16:27), Carolyn Fraze (49th, 16:55), Dejanee Martin (50th, 16:57), and Abby Homan (62nd, 18:09). With 105 points these ladies placed 4th out of 6 teams.

In the Large Schools' Varsity Boys' race Andrew Osgood ran near the leaders. He made a strong move in the middle of the race but was out sprinted at the finish by several runners. His strong effort still placed him 3rd for large schools and 8th for all runners. His time of 17:27 was the fastest time of the day for Stanislaus County runners. Cameron Miller (61st, 20:19); Pierson Devers (65th, 20:29); Kenji Soares (68th, 20:39); Ernesto Limon (71st, 20:45); Guadalupe Torres (75th, 20:53); and Ryan Holloway (80th, 21:13) comprised the Downey top 7. Their score of 238 placed them 10th out of 13 large school teams.

The varsity girls also competed in the large school's division. Sierra Durham led the way finishing 6th for large schools and 10th overall (2nd for Stanislaus County). The other top girls were Rory Jimenez (22nd, 22:47); Rocio Ramirez Castro (26th, 23:09); Madelein Souza (41st, 24:12); Adelaida Casas (52nd, 24:55); Katie Schreder (53rd, 24:57); and Karina Redding (57th, 25:02). As a team (even without the ailing Natalie) they placed 5th in the large school division and 1st for all Stanislaus County teams...which is really turning some heads.

In the coed JV race Alex Thomas (52nd, 14:10) and Eri Rojas (53rd, 14:11) were the first Downey runners across the line. Gabe Juarez made his debut in a Downey uniform with 58th place (14:36) just ahead of Alec Carson in 59th (14:37). See the bottom of the page for a complete list of all Downey athletes and their times.
