Bronco Distance Carnival

A handful of Downey runners traveled to Bella Vista HS last Friday for the Broinco Distance Carnival. Although there was rain during some of the races, long timing delays, and frigid temperatures by the end of the night, some impressive PR times were achieved.

Danny Mauricio was the first to take the track in the F/S boy's 1600m. It began to rain while they were lined up to begin. Even in the rain, Danny managed a near PR, 5:27.07 which placed him 38th.

In the varsity girl's 1600m Rory Jiminez, Anna Casas, and Natalie Franco all ran in the slower of the two heats. Anna ran in second place with Natalie and Rory close behind for the first two laps. Anna and Rory both moved to the front on the third lap. Anna began to fade on the final lap. Rory had a bit more in the tank but was passed down the stretch. Rory managed a 6:12.53 PR (38th overall). Anna was 6:19.37 (43rd) and Natalie was 6:24.62 (46th).

In the faster of the two heats, Rocio Ramirez Castro ran in the middle of the pack and was paced to finished below 5:40 until she tied up over the final 300m. She still placed 17th with a huge PR of 5:48.73.

In the girl's 800m Alicia Bargas ran a strong personal race to place 26th in 2:53.05.

Just before the varsity boy's 800m it began to pour. In spite of the rain Anthony Garcia went out hard and was leading at the 200m mark with Blake Lopes not far behind. Blake moved up the second 400m, while Anthony tied up and Saul Zigala hung on to the back of the pack. Blake would finish in 12th place overall with a huge PR of 2:06.89. The final results missed Anthony. Saul finished in 25th, 2:18.87.

To cap off the night for Downey's runners, Sierra Durham ran in the girl's 3200m. Unfortunatly the runners were held at the starting line without sweats for over 15 min. Now it was no longer raining, but it was cold enough to see you breath. After a 5:50 first mile split, Sierra said her arms and legs were completely numb. Her finishing time was 12:26.68 (17th).
